Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Genesis 32:22-32 | Psalm 145:8-9, 14-19, 21

In Genesis 32, Jacob, the trickster, is facing the consequences of tricking his brother Esau for his birthright and his father Isaac’s blessing. The cost of tricking Esau out of his birthright and blessing was having to flee to another country. To marry Rachel, Jacob had to work for 14 years and marry Rachel’s sister, Leah. After upsetting his uncle and father-in-law, God prompts Jacob to return to his ancestral land. Instead of a joyous homecoming, Jacob fears his brother will attack. He sends his family across the river and settles, alone, in the camping place beside the river Jabbock.

The Rev. Rebecca Shillingburg will be preaching this morning. Our children will present a special Vacation Bible School song. We will share in the sacrament of communion at the chancel rail.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Genesis 29:15-28 | Psalm 105:1-11, 45b | Romans 8:26-39 | Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52

“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose”—Romans 8:28. This is one of those verses of scripture that are often offered to people experiencing crisis or tragedy … by people who aren’t. It can be comforting … but it may not always be so. In Genesis 29, for instance, Jacob might not have found it comforting when he awoke on the first morning of his married life with the wrong woman! In Matthew 13, we find Jesus teaching by means of parables. Again, they may be comforting … or maybe not. But the psalmist knows what to focus on: “Remember the wonderful works the Lord has done, the miracles, and the judgments uttered by the Lord”—Psalm 105:5. Let us come together in worship to remember and rejoice.

The Rev. John Shillingburg will be preaching this morning.

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 7:15-25a  |  Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30

We clearly affirm that God is still speaking today at ERUCC, in Frederick, and in God’s whole creation. But how does what God speaks become a positive force for love, justice, and peace? That question is raised in the lectionary readings for July 9. Genesis 24 is a curious story of how God directs Abraham to secure a wife for his son, Isaac. Rebecca was at the right place at the right time, heard and heeded God speaking and said “Yes” to the proposal. In Romans 7:15-25a Paul recognizes our struggle within to hear and heed God speaking. In our Gospel lesson from Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 Jesus describes how hearers oppose what God has to say. They find fault and are not satisfied no matter what. Yet the good news is that God still speaks, ready to forgive, welcome, and receive all. Through our faith we hear and heed.

The Rev. Bob Manthey will be preaching and leading worship.

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 6: 1b-11  |  Matthew 10: 24-39

Jesus taught his disciples, the twelve and those to come, about what to expect because of their faithfulness. He prepares them for rejection, persecution, and martyrdom. At one point he offers the startling statement that he had come not to bring peace but a sword and that families and friends would be divided. The teaching is so stark that it is often ignored, rarely serving as the text in sermons. On this day we will wrestle with the text and reflect why, though uncomfortable, it is important. Have you ever thought about Jesus as a divider instead of uniter?

The Rev. David Cooney will be preaching and leading worship. The Senior Choir will be singing.

Third Sunday after Pentecost

Genesis 18: 1-15  | Matthew 9: 35 – 10:8

While Abraham is offering radical hospitality to strangers, he is told that his wife Sarah will bear a son. This strikes both Abraham and Sarah as funny, given their advanced age. The visitor is surprised by the response asking, “Is anything too wonderful for the Lord?” How do we respond to the dichotomy of reason and miracle? How do we answer the visitor’s question? The sermon will be about the impossible being possible.

The Rev. David Cooney will be preaching and leading worship. The Senior Choir will be singing.

Second Sunday after Pentecost

Genesis 12:1-9 | Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

In Genesis 12, Abraham is called at an old age to leave his home and settle in a new land. The call comes with a promise that God will make of him a great nation. Abraham obeys and, along with an entourage of family members and servants, leaves Haran and travels south to Canaan. What would motivate you to leave your home well-past retirement age and move to an unknown location? Abraham stands as the first of the patriarchs – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – and is the first participant in the covenant between God and Israel. The sermon is about change being scary good.

The Rev. David Cooney will be preaching and leading worship. We will be sharing communion at the chancel rail this morning. Spirit will be singing.
