April 20– Easter Sunday

10:30 AM, Worship with Holy Communion in Sanctuary and Livestream

Grief is a healthy response to Jesus’ death and a valid way to enter worship on Easter morning. And yet, the women at the empty tomb are given hope amidst their mourning. The other disciples don’t believe the women’s message, but Peter, living in the in-between of grief and hope, runs to the tomb to see for himself. Grieving doesn’t have to make us hopeless. Hope can compel us to take action when we are deep in grief.

This morning, we will share in the Sacrament of Holy Communion at stations in the front of the Sanctuary. The Senior Choir will sing and guest brass players will join us in celebration. We will also add to our Prayer Tree, expanding its inclusivity with brightly colored prayer flowers, alongside the fresh flowers we place on the Easter Cross, symbolizing our collective prayers and the beauty of resurrection hope.

7:30 PM Worship in Sanctuary and Livestream

As Jesus dies on the cross, one thief resists him and the other accepts him as Messiah. Jesus resists the empire but accepts his fate. We also are called to resist systems of power and oppression, and yet we ultimately have to accept that Jesus dies—and one day we will too. We have to discern what to accept as given and what to resist, what is “God’s will,” and what is the result of our own unquestioned systems.

The Senior Choir will sing at the 7:30 PM service.

In his final hours, Jesus redefines power through acts of humility, including sharing a final meal with his closest friends and those who will soon betray him. After breaking bread, the disciples argue about who is the greatest, but Jesus tells them that the greatest must be the least and the leader must be the servant, turning their hierarchy on its head. According to Jesus, humility is powerful, and real power is shown through humility.

We will commemorate the last Supper as we share in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The Senior Choir will sing.

April 13  – Palm Sunday

shouting & silence | Luke 19:29-40

Jesus doesn’t instigate his own parade. Instead, just his quiet presence alone inspires the multitude to shout out and praise God. When the religious leaders try to silence the crowd, Jesus tells them that the noise level isn’t the point—even the stones would cry out if they were silent. It takes wisdom to know when our voice is needed and when it’s just noise.

Palm Sunday begins the succession of days known as Holy Week, commemorating the final events of Jesus’ earthly ministry. We will mark this sacred day with a triumphant processional of palms led by our children and youth, recalling Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where crowds welcomed him by waving palm branches—signifying his coming as a king. This moment of joyful celebration also serves as a solemn reminder of the suffering and sacrifice that would soon follow. The Senior Choir will be singing and Market Street Brass will be featured.

Lenten Guide 2025

As we enter the season of Lent, we are invited into a time of reflection, renewal, and spiritual growth. ERUCC’s Lenten Guide 2025 is now available, offering details about Lenten and Easter worship services, faith and fellowship activities for all ages, and prayers to guide and inspire us on this journey of faith.

This year, we’ll explore the Gospel of Luke through our Lenten theme, “Everything in Between.” As we move through these sacred weeks, may we discover God’s presence not just in moments of certainty, but in the complexities of life, faith, and transformation.

March 24– Palm Sunday
“And I hope”

We might expect that, after denying Christ, Peter would cower in shame—or perhaps even run away
in an attempt to leave his past behind him. Instead, when he hears the news from the women, he
doesn’t dismiss them like the other disciples. He gets up and runs to the tomb. When he peers into the
empty tomb and sees the linen cloth, he is filled with awe. Even after the biggest failures, even after
the worst-case scenario has happened, can we run toward hope? Like Peter, will we keep going? Will
we keep looking for God in our midst?

The Senior Choir will sing, and we will have guest brass players.

March 29 – Good Friday
“Prone to leave the God I love””

John 13:31 – 19:30

On this Holy Day, we are paying close attention to how Peter acts in Jesus’ final hours. So much
happens in a short amount of time: Jesus predicts Peter’s denial, soldiers come and Peter draws his
sword, Jesus is arrested and Peter28 denies him, Peter denies Jesus again and again and the cock
crows, then Jesus is crucified and dies. Peter is prone to mess up, to fight, to deny, to leave, to seek
safety for himself. But aren’t we all? May we lament all the ways we are prone to leave the God we love.

Easter

Seeking: Who are you looking for?

Matthew 28:1-10

Jesus, mysteriously appearing to Mary as the gardener, asks her: “Why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” In the haze of grief, Mary can only see what is right before her—or in this case, what is not before her. It is  only when Jesus calls her by name that the veil is lifted and she beholds the resurrected Christ. On this Easter morning, who—or what—are you looking for? Why have you come to the tomb? What kind of Jesus are you looking for? What veils need to be lifted so we can recognize God’s resurrection wherever it occurs?

We will share pew communion during the 10:30 am service. Special music will be provided by a brass ensemble as well as our Senior Choir.

Good Friday – A Service of Silence and Sorrow

Seeking: Why have you forsaken me?

Matthew 27:27-50

Jesus’ final lament gives voice to all those who have been forsaken— those who suffer injustice, those who are abandoned, those who are unjustly convicted. Instead of trying to answer this question with logic or theology, we are invited to live it, to sit with it. Sitting with this unsettling question unearths and unveils many more questions: What do we do in the face of unimaginable suffering? Can we sit in the silence of death and trust that God is there? Will we be in solidarity with those who suffer and grieve?

Holy Thursday

Holy Communion and Tenebrae Service in Main Sanctuary and Livestream

Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “commandment.” As recorded in John’s gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34).

This service has three main parts:

A Service of Light based on the traditional Vespers service in which we recognize Christ our Light

A Service of Holy Communion in which we are invited to participate as one of The Twelve at the Last Supper

A Service of Shadows: Tenebrae, in which we meditate on the Passion of Christ and experience in dramatic form the extinguishing of the Light

If you are participating in worship online, please have a plate with a piece of bread or cracker and a cup with grape juice, wine, or water. You may also consider adding a small bowl with water and a hand towel. During the service, you will be invited to lift the bread or cracker and the cup for a blessing.
