Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Genesis 32:22-32 | Psalm 145:8-9, 14-19, 21
In Genesis 32, Jacob, the trickster, is facing the consequences of tricking his brother Esau for his birthright and his father Isaac’s blessing. The cost of tricking Esau out of his birthright and blessing was having to flee to another country. To marry Rachel, Jacob had to work for 14 years and marry Rachel’s sister, Leah. After upsetting his uncle and father-in-law, God prompts Jacob to return to his ancestral land. Instead of a joyous homecoming, Jacob fears his brother will attack. He sends his family across the river and settles, alone, in the camping place beside the river Jabbock.
The Rev. Rebecca Shillingburg will be preaching this morning. Our children will present a special Vacation Bible School song. We will share in the sacrament of communion at the chancel rail.
