Good Friday – A Service of Silence and Sorrow

Seeking: Why have you forsaken me?

Matthew 27:27-50

Jesus’ final lament gives voice to all those who have been forsaken— those who suffer injustice, those who are abandoned, those who are unjustly convicted. Instead of trying to answer this question with logic or theology, we are invited to live it, to sit with it. Sitting with this unsettling question unearths and unveils many more questions: What do we do in the face of unimaginable suffering? Can we sit in the silence of death and trust that God is there? Will we be in solidarity with those who suffer and grieve?

Holy Thursday

Holy Communion and Tenebrae Service in Main Sanctuary and Livestream

Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “commandment.” As recorded in John’s gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34).

This service has three main parts:

A Service of Light based on the traditional Vespers service in which we recognize Christ our Light

A Service of Holy Communion in which we are invited to participate as one of The Twelve at the Last Supper

A Service of Shadows: Tenebrae, in which we meditate on the Passion of Christ and experience in dramatic form the extinguishing of the Light

If you are participating in worship online, please have a plate with a piece of bread or cracker and a cup with grape juice, wine, or water. You may also consider adding a small bowl with water and a hand towel. During the service, you will be invited to lift the bread or cracker and the cup for a blessing.

Incarnation: Rediscovering the Significance of Christmas

We will gather virtually for prayer and reflection on the names for Jesus.

In Incarnation: Rediscovering the Significance of Christmas, best-selling author Adam Hamilton examines the names of Christ used by the gospel writers, exploring the historical and personal significance of his birth.
In the face of uncertainty and conflict, Christians reclaim the Christ Child who brings us together, heals our hearts, and calls us to bring light into the darkness.
