June 30 – Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 | Mark 5:21-43

Out of the depths of grief, David laments the death of Jonathan and Saul. Out of the depths of desperation, Jairus calls to Jesus. Out of the depths, a woman grasps to touch Jesus’ cloak. Experiences of vulnerability cause us to feel as if we have nowhere to turn. In these times and places, we are invited to turn to God, whose compassion knows no boundaries. In what ways does grief flow from and become shaped by different experiences of loss – loss of dreams, loss of relationship, loss of life? For what do we cry out and grieve in our lives and the church today? Where would we risk vulnerability for the sake of healing?

We welcome our friends from Evangelischer Pfarrbereich Klein Schwechten in Germany to our service this morning. The Senior Choir will sing.

June 23– Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
1 Samuel 17: 1-16, 32-50  | Mark 4:35-41

In Mark 4:35-41, the disciples are in a boat with Jesus in the middle of a storm and, in their fear, accuse Jesus of not caring for them. Jesus’ words, “Peace. Be still!” calm the storm. God is always with us, and we can rely on God. This week’s texts stand to testify that God remains close by God’s people. We are each created uniquely in God’s image. We are called to stay true to who God created us to be and to lead authentically. God is not for or against one group or people but for justice and peace throughout the world. How are you allowing God to use your authentic self and act courageously for justice for all?

June 16 – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
1 Samuel 15:34 – 16:13 | Mark 4:26-34

God is always faithful and remains engaged with God’s people, but not always in predictable ways. Jesus tells the parable of the tiny mustard seed to reveal God’s surprising, unexpected plan to use even small communities of faith to accomplish God’s will. Similarly, God used David, the youngest in his family, to accomplish God’s will. God’s realm may seem unattainable at times, but Jesus assures us that it is alive – growing and spreading even from small acts of faith until everyone finds a home in it.

June 9 – Third Sunday after Pentecost
1 Samuel 8:4-11, 16-20 | Mark 3:20-35

Leadership is a daunting task. Responsibility upon responsibility is overwhelming, and the desire to accomplish often threatens what is best for those whom we lead. It is natural to look at the examples of our heroes, but authentic leadership comes when the Holy Spirit guides us. Leadership is redefined when we follow first. We are presented with an example of God’s Spirit leading in ways that are subversive to human expectations in Mark 3:20-35. The mark of God’s leadership seems to be a reversal of human ways. What does that reveal about your perspectives on leadership? Where do you see God’s upside-down work in the world?

Spirit will be sharing in music leadership this morning. You are invited to wear orange as a public witness in support of gun violence prevention.

June 2 – Pride Sunday  |  Second Sunday after Pentecost
Isaiah 56:1-8 | 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Pride Sunday is a celebration of the image of God in everyone and the diversity of humanity. In the beginning, when God breathed the breath of life in us, God blessed us and called us very good. There is no better way to celebrate the fact that we were created in the image of the Divine than by being unapologetically ourselves and becoming the people God called us to be: authentic, whole, complex, and made to love.

This Sunday, we will share communion. We will give thanks for all those who supported children, youth, and adult Christian Education classes and activities this year. The Senior Choir will sing and anthems will be offered by the Chancel Handbell Choir and Children’s Music and Movement.

May 26 – Trinity Sunday
Isaiah 6:1-8  |  Romans 8:12-17  |  John 3:1-17

On this Sunday, when the church invites us to celebrate our most foundational and confounding doctrine, the scriptures demonstrate the three persons of the Trinity (Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer) working together to call, equip, and send out God’s people. To be effective in leading where we are called, we must lean into both the mystery and power of God. Our world likes easy answers and superficial sound bites. However, the call to follow Jesus is one that brings us into something deeper and more difficult. This challenge is one that is not to be taken lightly. However, it offers us a greater adventure and a more meaningful life. It is up to us, though, to accept the healing coal that God offers us or seek to stay cowering in our unworthiness.

The Rev. Kirstin Shrom-Rhoads will be preaching. The Senior Choir will sing. We will honor and celebrate graduates.

May 19 – Pentecost Sunday
Acts 2:1-21 | John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

On Pentecost Sunday, Christians around the world celebrate the formation of the church when the Holy Spirit called people into community as Christ’s body and blessed them with universal understanding of languages. Some theologians describe Pentecost as the Church’s birthday. Others describe it as a “big bang” that brought the Church into being, for just as God’s Spirit came rushing into the world over the waters of creation, in Acts 2, God’s Spirit rushes into the world to gather and transform God’s people.

So where does that leave us? If we are willing to be amazed, Pentecost is one of the most awe-inspiring days in our Christian calendar. If we are willing to be transformed, it is an opportunity to be renewed in energy and faithfulness toward the work of God’s kingdom on earth when all people will experience true liberation and boundless love.

The Senior Choir will sing. We will receive the Strengthen Our Church Offering today and will welcome Nikao Washington through the Sacrament of Baptism. Nikao is the child of Karly Johnson and Chase Washington, the grandchild of Dwayne and Kathy Johnson, and the great-grandson of Patti Patterson.

May 12 – Seventh Sunday of Easter
Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 | John 17:6-19

Jesus prays for the disciples that they be one, unified with God in Christ and with each other. He prays that they will have joy, for their unity, and that God will protect them as he sends them into an unwelcoming world. Recorded during the late first century, the prayer reinforced the relationship between the disciples, Jesus, and God. God has chosen them; they are worthy and not abandoned.

Today, we will ordain and install the newly elected elders, deacons, and committee chairs. Spirit will be sharing in music leadership this morning.
