Psalm 149  |  Mark 11:1-10 | Acts 2:1-17, 21

On Pentecost Sunday, Christians around the world celebrate the formation of the church when the Holy Spirit called people into community as Christ’s body and blessed them with universal understanding of languages. Some theologians describe Pentecost as the Church’s birthday. Others describe it as a “big bang” that brought the Church into being, for just as God’s Spirit came rushing into the world over the waters of creation, in Acts 2, God’s Spirit rushes into the world to gather and transform God’s people.

So where does that leave us? If we are willing to be amazed, Pentecost is one of the most awe-inspiring days in our Christian calendar. If we are willing to be transformed, it is an opportunity to be renewed in energy and faithfulness toward the work of God’s kingdom on earth when all people will experience true liberation and boundless love.

We humans love repetition… up to a point. But sometimes we just need a good “Wow!” and some goosebumps to help us feel fully alive. Our physical response to awe-filled moments come from a very ancient part of our evolution–even before language. And those goosebumps? They helped us forge connections with others as we faced the vast mysteries of life together. Delight still plays an important role in our spiritual needs and in our sense of a deeply relational life.

The element of curiosity is linked to wellbeing of all kinds–spiritually, mentally, creatively. Awe-filled experiences are curiosity-boosters. Play, imagination, experimentation, and even simply slowing down to “linger longer” as we engage with the sights and sounds and smells of our ordinary surroundings can add to the amount of awe in our lives. Curiosity resists easy labeling and classifying, rather it invites us to deeper discovery about life, faith, and each other.

We humans are “meaning-mongers.” Our brains are wired to interpret the ordinary stuff of life in metaphorical ways so that we can make some sense of it all. We long for meaningful lives in which we are more sure about the direction of our lives and about what we are to bring to this world. We yearn for experiences that leave us feeling more fulfilled. When we are “on the lookout” for meaning in our lives, we live at a deeper level and mere existence turns into purpose.

February 8 – Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Isaiah 58:1–9a (9b–12) | Matthew 6:1–14

As Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew’s Gospel turns our attention to prayer, generosity, and the shape of a faithful life. In teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus offers more than words to recite, he gives his followers a way of trusting God daily, seeking forgiveness, and aligning their lives with God’s reign. Isaiah’s call to a faith that loosens injustice and restores community echoes this prayerful vision. Together, these texts invite us into a faith that is sincere, embodied, and rooted in God’s sustaining grace.

Isaiah 49:1–7 | Matthew 5:13–20

In Matthew’s Gospel, those who are blessed are also entrusted with responsibility: to be salt of the earth and light of the world. Faith, Jesus teaches, is not hidden or private, but meant to be lived out in ways that shape the world around us. Micah’s ancient call to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God resonates with Matthew’s vision of a faith that is visible, embodied, and transformative. Together, these texts invite us to consider how our lives reflect God’s light and participate in the healing of the world.

January 18  – Second Sunday after the Epiphany

Isaiah 49:1–7 | Matthew 5:1-12

In the season after Epiphany, we listen for how God’s reign is revealed not through force or certainty, but through lives shaped by mercy, humility, and hope. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus begins his public teaching not with commands, but with blessings. Speaking from a mountainside, he names the poor in spirit, the grieving, the meek, and the peacemakers as those closest to God’s heart. Alongside Isaiah’s vision of a servant called to be a light to the nations, these words invite us to imagine what it means to live as people shaped by God’s blessing, even when the world tells a different story.

January 11  – Baptism of Christ Sunday

Isaiah 42:1-9 | Matthew 3:13-17

In this season after the Epiphany, the scriptures invite us to wonder about the unfolding possibilities that are opened to us through the revealing of God’s ways in Jesus the Christ. On this Baptism of Christ Sunday, we hear God’s Spirit-filled voice speaking new things into action, reminding us that we are God’s beloved children. The Gospel lesson from Matthew is the account of Jesus’ baptism. The voice from heaven that speaks at Jesus’ baptism echoes the voice spoken in Isaiah. These words proclaim the mission of God’s beloved servant to restore justice.

This day, we celebrate Jesus’ baptism and remember the role our baptism has played in our lives. It is a day we also remember that along with Jesus, we are beloved by God and empowered to participate in God’s healing work in the world. We will give thanks for Dr. Morgan’s interim ministry at ERUCC. Spirit will be sharing in music leadership.
