We are set free to respond to God’s call and participate fully in the new life of God’s healing reign. Jesus welcomes, loves, and restores. What is our call to discipleship in the new life that Jesus brings?

As God calls us to claim our roles as disciples, our response is grounded in faith. What is this faith? In the readings today, we encounter the dynamic nature of faith and its expression in the lives of individuals and communities. We live in the assurance of faith as we await the fullness of the reign of God. This week, we are encouraged again to look to the example of faithful witnesses for the assurance we need to keep hoping and believing.

July 27 – Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Prayer is at the heart of discipleship. Prayer is at the heart of our relationship with God. The readings for today lift up God’s nature of love and compassion; they assure us of God’s readiness to hear and attend to our prayers. As we pray, we know God more fully, and as we know God more fully, we pray confidently and with persistence.

July 20 – Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

The call to take up the role of discipleship encompasses a call to ground our daily living in the word of God. Each day, there are opportunities to hear and follow God’s word, if only we pause and listen. The action of faithful discipleship is informed by reflection on Christ and the way of God’s realm.

July 13 – Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

This week’s readings invite us to consider how love and compassion are the essence of living faithfully. They call us to shape our lives according to God’s justice and mercy, striving for relationships that enable community. God’s word has ultimate authority and responding to God’s call for justice and compassion is everything.

July 6 – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

2 Kings 5:1–14  |  Luke 10:1–11, 16–20

Naaman expects a grand healing, but God’s grace comes through a humble messenger and a simple act. These readings challenge us to move beyond our comfort zones and listen to voices we often overlook. As Jesus sends his followers out, he calls us to practice humility, rely on others, and share peace without expecting control. Following Christ means letting go of privilege and pride—and opening ourselves to the transforming power of God’s unexpected ways.

We will share in communion at the chancel rail. The ERUCC Summertide Choir will sing.

June 29– Third Sunday after Pentecost

2 Kings 2:1–2, 6–14 | Luke 9:51-62

In Luke 9:51–62, Jesus and the disciples are on the journey to Jerusalem. The disciples, angry when a village does not welcome them, want to call down fire from heaven, an echo of the Elijah story in 2 Kings 1:9–12. Jesus shows them a new way, teaching them, and us, to love our enemies. Jesus reminds us of the cost of picking up the mantle of discipleship. Other loyalties must be set aside, and there can be no turning back when we make a commitment to follow Jesus.

June 22 – Second Sunday after Pentecost

1 Kings 19:1-4, (5-7), 8-15a | Galatians 3:23-29

This week’s readings invite us to turn our whole selves – body, mind, and spirit – toward God, who envelops us in grace. God nourishes and sustains us and reaches out to us in the depths of our despair or aloneness. There are challenges in being faithful; God delights in each one of us and supports us as we journey in God’s presence. In Galatians 3:23–39, Paul is responding to challenging questions from those who say gentile converts must keep all the demands of the Jewish law. Paul argues that, by baptism, we are all children of God through faith and heirs of the promise to Abraham. There is no distinction between Jew and Gentile. All are one in Christ.
