World Communion Sunday
Matthew 21: 23-32
This morning we celebrate World Communion Sunday. This day is observed in many parts of the world to acknowledge the fact that Christians around the world are – symbolically – gathered around a common table. You will be invited to come to the table, where you can try several different kinds of bread as we celebrate the diversity in the body of Christ. The Rev. Carolyn Boyd, Pastor of Congregational Care at Hope United Church of Christ in Alexandria, Virginia, will be preaching and leading worship.
The Senior Choir will be singing.

Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Psalm 150 | Ephesians 5: 15-20
Today we will sing the liturgy, letting the words and music of hymns over the centuries help us to praise God, pray, confess, and hear the gospel. We will also hear some behind the scenes stories of some hymns. Be prepared to follow the advice of the apostle Paul who counsels us to speak in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.
The Senior Choir will be singing.

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Exodus 1:8—2:10 | Matthew 16:13-20
The book of Exodus begins many years after Joseph lived, so many in fact, that a new Pharaoh comes to the throne “who does not know Joseph.” The descendants of Jacob and his 12 sons are now slaves and have become so numerous that they frighten Pharaoh: “What might they do against us?” He decides to solve the problem by killing all the male babies born to the Israelites, but his plan is foiled … in part … by several resourceful women.
The Rev. John Shillingburg will be preaching this morning. We welcome Jonas Dawson as our guest organist.

Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
2 Corinthians 5:16-20 | Genesis 45:1-15
In the years since Joseph arrived in Egypt as a slave, his ability to interpret Pharoah’s dreams has made him second only to Pharoah. Using grain reserves stored during years of plenty, he saves the people from seven years of famine. Sent by Jacob to Egypt to buy food, the brothers are bought to Joseph to conduct the transaction. They don’t recognize him. After Joseph tests them to find out whether they have changed, he reveals himself to them in a dramatic reunion. He forgives them for selling him into slavery, telling them that what they meant for evil, God meant for good.
The Rev. Rebecca Shillingburg will be preaching this morning. We welcome Jonas Dawson as our guest organist.

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28 | Romans 10:8-13
Chapter 37 of Genesis starts the story of Joseph, probably the longest sustained narrative about one person in the Hebrew Scriptures. Jacob was a trickster, but Joseph is just a brat! God again shows us that God will choose whom to work through.
The Rev. John Shillingburg will be preaching this morning.
